Deputy Involved Shooting

NORFOLK, VA— At approximately 2:30 this morning a man inside the public safety building got into an altercation with two of our deputies. A service weapon was fired. The suspect fled but was later located and taken into custody without incident. The suspect suffered a non life—threatening gunshot wound and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The suspect left a bag behind. After careful inspection, the bomb squad rendered the bag safe. All precautions were made to ensure the safety of inmates at the Norfolk City Jail and all personnel who work within the area of concern.

The Norfolk Police Department will handle the assault on law enforcement investigation. Sheriff Baron has requested that the Virginia State Police, an independent outside agency, investigate the deputy involved shooting. The Norfolk Sheriff's Office will also conduct an administrative internal investigation.

"I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the Norfolk Police and Fire departments for their swift and thorough response to this morning's incident. Public safety is our number one priority and we thank our partner agencies for all of their hard work. I am thankful my deputies are safe and unharmed. My prayers are for a speedy recovery for the injured suspect,” Sheriff Joe Baron said.

As with any deputy involved shooting, the two deputies will be placed on paid administrative duties pending the outcome of all investigations.

Any questions in reference to the shooting investigation must be referred to Virginia State Police.

The Norfolk Sheriff's Office is a values driven organization committed to
public safety, public service, and public trust.
